How to choose and enroll in the right plan

There’s a lot to consider when deciding which ACA health plan is best for your needs. Here, you’ll get help with choosing a plan and collecting what information you’ll need to enroll.

Consider all the factors

Do you qualify for financial assistance to help pay for your health plan? If so, how much assistance will you receive? Think about your total healthcare costs—not just monthly premiums, but also out-of-pocket costs. That will help you determine which plan’s cost structure works best for you. And consider what additional benefits your ACA health plan offers to provide added value.

Go to our Insurance basics page for in-depth answers on topics including financial assistance eligibility and cost comparisons.

Enrolling during the Special Enrollment Period

You can enroll in or change your plan because of life changes during the Special Enrollment Period. You may qualify if, during the past 60 days, you’ve gotten married, had a child, moved, lost coverage due to divorce or job change, or if someone on your plan has died. Learn about the Special Enrollment Period and see a list of qualifying events.

New government subsidies can make plans more affordable

70-80% of customers are eligible for subsidies, and new subsidy guidelines are driving lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs for many members, reducing premium costs for families in higher income tiers while also bringing low-income families’ premiums to $0 (or near $0).

Choosing your "metallic level"

When comparing plans on the Marketplace, all ACA plans are categorized as Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum. Generally, categories with higher premiums (Gold and Platinum) pay more of your total healthcare costs, while Bronze and Silver pay less.

This can help you decide which metallic level is best for you. For example, if you don’t expect to use regular medical services or take regular prescriptions, you may want a Bronze plan. These plans can have lower monthly premiums, but have higher deductibles and pay less when you need care. If you expect frequent doctor visits or need regular prescriptions, then you may want a Gold plan. These plans usually have higher premiums but pay more of your costs when you need care.
